Fecko - R.A.P (Real African Poets) ft Synik, Holstar & Fikrah

"I guess my destiny's always been inscribed in my heart,
so like my continent I let myself shine through the dark"
- Synik

Another dope track from Nigerian Fecko Tha Emcee - this time he brings along a few comrades from around the continent. Guest verses from Synik (Zimbabwe), Holstar (Zambia) & Fikrah (Kenya) all come together on a Tek-Zilla beat to create a quality African hip hop collabo:

10 Gems from Chuck D on African Hip Hop

Last night the legendary Chuck D of Public Enemy held a workshop at Red Bull Studios in Cape Town where he spoke for 2 hours on the state of hip hop, global music culture and the future of African hip hop.

Dplanet (Pioneer Unit) was in attendance and from the sounds of things Chuck D was dropping knowledge! Dplanet managed to jot down a list of 10 nuggets of advice from the master. This should be compulsory reading for everyone involved in the African music industry:

 1. Don't be an 'Afrimerican - don't copy the US. Be proudly African.
 2. SA needs an infrastructure that supports local hip hop (DJs / radio / media/ blogs)
 3. Don’t let corporations (like MTV or Metro FM) dictate your musical / cultural agenda

Head over to the Pioneer Unit website to read the rest of the list.

"You in the club acting all famous
Nobody even know what your name is
Plenty bottles but nobody's at your table
He's WTF looking like some bloody agents"

Dope visuals from AKA for his new single 'Victory Lap'. The video came out real nice and you can see a couple of behind the scenes snaps over @HeadHoncho

Taking nothing away from the song or the video, but I still maintain that THIS is the jam!

F.U.1.2 (Coz We Want To) - Reason, Hyphen, Mothipa, AKA & Ill Skillz

I'll let J.Flexx (Ill Skillz) tell it in his own words:
Produced by pH the track features Reason, Mothipa, Hyphen,Ill Skillz and AKA. It's an unlikely combination of rappers from South Africa, a posse cut that breaks the commercial/underground barrier and sits firmly on the foundation this culture built on. Love Hip Hop!
Coz We Want To (MASTER) by J.Flexx

Crazy joint!! We liked it so much we decided to post it, Coz We Want To! Plus its always nice to see African artists coming together and creating good music.

[UPDATE] NIGERIAN NOVEMBER (part 2)

Nigerian November continues with two dope remixes from artists we have featured before on 25tolyf.com - first up is Teeto Ceemos who addresses a certain lady over the Chris Brown 'Dueces' beat along with some help from Verse, Iceberg Slim & Loose Kaynon:

Teeto Ceemos - Bars over Dueces ft Verse, Iceberg Slim & Loose Kaynon

Next up is another brilliant track by Show Dem Camp - this time the topic is the state of Nigerian politics and their leaders. This one is a gem, I wish more African hip hop artists would address issues like this in their music:

Show Dem Camp - So Appalled

[UPDATE] NIGERIAN NOVEMBER

First up, apologies for the lack of updates on the website this month - I was travelling around the motherland for the last few weeks and did not always have access to a computer. But don't worry, we are back and there will be plenty of new posts from today.

Now we got that out the way, lets get to the good stuff.

I did a bit of scouting to see what I had missed over the last few weeks, and I have to say, Naija seems to have been holding it down for African hip hop in November!!

Check it:

Ikechukwu aka International Killz - Bad Guy

Bigz - Star Man

Rapcheff - Nigerian

M.anifest - Coming to America [VIDEO]

M.anifest drops some lovely visuals for 'Coming to America' a track off his upcoming Spring 2011 release - 'Coming to America: Immigrant Chronicles'.

Great song, definately something those of us in the diaspora can relate to:

D'Crow - This is Hip Hop ft. Teeto Ceemos, Big T & EX-O

D'Crow calls on some friends to drop some flows on a classic DJ Premier beat - I have to admit, they kinda killed it. This is hip hop.

Taken from his upcoming 'The Uncaged Mixtape'.

Ben Sharpa - Check The Evidence [VIDEO]

Pioneer Unit just provided us with some powerful visuals to match the powerful message in 'Check The Evidence' from Ben Sharpa's debut solo album, B.Sharpa.

Dplanet is one of the most under-rated producers around if you ask me, his beats are always HUGE! You can't help but nod your head, and B.Sharpa compliments the backdrop beautifully with some socially-conscious, thought-provoking lyrics. Pay attention!

Check how they roll @PioneerUnit

Tehn Diamond - The Student of the Game: Boys Will Be Boys

And so it begins..

The first project to drop on 10.10.10 is from a Zimbabwean artist by the name of Tehn Diamond who you should all know by now, and if not let this be your introduction. This mixtape is the follow up to his acclaimed first mixtape The Student of the Game: Higher Learning

Tehn Diamond - The Student of the Game: Boys Will Be Boys

I'll let Tehn explain it in his own words:
So “The Student Of The Game: Boys Will Be Boys” is an expression of the less pensive side of me, the fun-loving life of the party side to me. I never want to be boxed in as being any one type of artist, #SOTG1 gave the impression that I’m just deep and emotional, well I’m also shallow and flawed. I feel its important to give a full and clear representation of myself in this art, its what makes music timeless in my eyes. So on this project, fans of Tehn DIamond can expect a happier more care-free Tehn Diamond. We’re gonna have fun, we’re gonna try and forget that we struggling to realise our dreams and live in the moment. But then #SOTG3 is gonna be our reality cheque…the same one I received once I returned from Singapore, but thats another story for another day.

Thugga - Give Me A Sign ft DJ Peewee

This has got to be the best track off the Thugga October 28 EP that we posted a few days ago. Not only did DJ Peewee produce this beat, he makes a brilliant guest appearance singing the hook! We already knew he was a talented DJ and producer, but we didn't know he could sing too!!

Anyway make sure you listen, this is a great track and Thugga killed it too:

Thugga - October 28 EP

Thugga, a member of the Zone Fam, just dropped a brand new EP and its CRAZY!!!

The backdrop is provided mostly by 25 to Lyf's DJ Peewee on the boards (he produced 5 of the tracks on the EP) but Thugga is certainly the centre of attention here and he quickly grabs your attention with some well constructed lines and clever punchlines.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this EP as I have not heard much of Thugga's solo work before, but I was impressed by this project. One thing is for sure, he got bars for days!!

I could have done without the annoying intro, but once you get past that its nothing but heat.

Jnr Brown & MC Chita - The Voice [TEASER]

BIG tune from the boys back home in Zimbabwe!!! I'm loving this - dope verses and catchy hook. I'm definately looking forward to the full video.

The album 'Kings Rendezvous', which I believe is a collaboration album between Jnr Brown & MC Chita, drops December 1st - and if this is anything to go by, its going to be a BANGER!

MediaRight have been putting out some dope tracks recently. Respect.

Golden Chariots Vol. 2 by San the Instru-Monumentalist

I have a confession to make - I have been holding out on you. I apologise. Its not really fair that I have had this on repeat for the last week and yet I did not share it with you all.

What I love about this project, apart from the obvious great production that no doubt took plenty of time and hard work, but also the fact that San deliberately chose some lesser known verses from 'non-mainstream' artists to compliment his beats.

The result? Pure, high-grade DOPE!

My favourite track is the 'Broken Stairways to Heaven' interlude. That beat is like a healthy snack, bananas and nuts!

Oh, and if I haven't convinced you yet, its also FREE. Well, what are you waiting for..?

MNET Africa's Top 10 Rappers 2010

1 - HHP (South Africa)
2 - D-Black (Ghana)
3 - M.I (Nigeria)
4 - Zeus (Botswana)
5 - Sasha P (Nigeria)
6 - R2Bees (Ghana)
7 - Nameless (Kenya)
8 - Dama Do Bling (Mozambique)
9 - Ikechukwu (Nigeria)
10 - Tumi (South Africa)

Interesting list from MNET Africa - I would like to know how they came up with this because I have several issues with it.

Firstly, I'm a little disappointed there was no Zimbabwean representative (ZUBZ anyone??), especially considering I have never heard of half of the names on this list! And what about MODENINE??

I'm not mad at HHP being up the top, but I think Tumi should be higher than he is, and what about someone like K'naan? Is he no longer considered an African rapper just because he is now based overseas??

I dunno, maybe I am just hating. What do you think, did they get it right? Let us know in the comments who YOU think should have made the top 10.

The Kritik - 25 To Life

You know I HAD to post this with a title like that! Crazy beat from The Kritik:

25 to life by Corporate Nemesis

The beat is lifted off the excellent instrumental album 'The Kritik vs. Project-Kay' which you can download FREE from their bandcamp page - along with the previously mentioned Isosceles 'Untitled EP'.

Make sure you go and grab both those projects right now - its not everyday you get such great music for free! Props to my man @NemesisInc once again.

Str8Buttah - Set It Off

Here at 25toLyf.com, The African Hip Hop Blog, its no secret that we have been supporters of Str8Buttah for a while. (see here and here)

The team from Nigeria continues to impress with 'Set It Off', a track taken from their compilation mixtape 'The Lost Gemz'. I'd like to know who produced this (I would guess Teckzilla) because I'm loving this beat. Enjoy!

The Holstar- Six Sixteens

If grinding was an event in the Olympics, this dude would be Usain Bolt. Here is the latest offering from the grinda-holic emcee known as The Holstar. This is a project which he has entitled "The Six Sixteens" in which he has put together a deadly dosage of rhymes and metaphors guaranteed to pop vain. Hailing from the metropolis of Lusaka, Big Holstar has always held it down with solid lyrics and content, almost single handedly holding down for the much needed underground scene in Zambia. Marinade on this my people.... Salute!

A.K.A - B.M.F (Exclusive)

Firstly, let me say Rick Ross's B.M.F is probably my favourite track of the year so far, and needless to say a lot of cats have tried to jump on the bandwagon. So far i havent been impressed by most renditions bar Lupe Fiasco's effort. But along comes A.K.A with his version of BMF.......... and i cant front... THIS JOINT IS SMOKING!! A.K.A. is really becoming one of my favourite rappers out there.. keep grindin playa.

M.anifest - If I Was King ft Krukid

M.anifest - 'If I Was King' ft Krukid

If you haven't heard his name before, let me introduce you to M.anifest.

Born in Accra, Ghana and now resident in Minneapolis, The Star Tribune named his debut album Manifestations as one of the top 5 albums of 2007 across genres and later asked "What's a rapper from Ghana who's as smart as Talib Kweli and as funky as Kanye West doing in Minnesota?"

Good question. All I know is that the music is great!

I've also included a video below from A.R.M (M.anifest + Krukid + Budo) ft Brother Ali...enjoy!

Taken from the "Uprising" LP.

Spoek Mathambo - the 'Prince of Township Tech'

Ok, this isn't exactly hip hop (I'm not sure what to call it actually), but it is definately DOPE.

His sound has been described as 'Electrorap', but Spoek prefers to call it 'township tech' and this is the first single 'Mshini Wam' off his debut solo album:

He is getting some serious coverage internationally, just check out this months FADER magazine if you want to know more - he made the cover!

Props to HeadHoncho for putting me on.

Isosceles - Never Underestimate (Lesotho hip hop)

"They think less of me, but I give more
Stand tall & stay strong like a King Kong"

Isosceles ft Core Wreckah - Never Underestimate (produced by Cymptom)

UPDATE: This track was lifted from Isosceles 'Untitled EP' (click for free download). I've been listening to it for the past hour, definately gets the 25toLyf stamp of approval - some classic hip hop tunes!!

OkayAfrica!

I was doing my regular rounds on the blogs today, when I was pleasantly surprised to discover that okayplayer have a new site dedicated entirely to African music & culture! Check it out > okayafrica.

This is great news considering there really is a lack of good quality websites/blogs that focus on African music, yet we all know how much amazing talent the motherland has to offer! Okayplayer generally has good writers + content so I'm looking forward to seeing what the new site brings to the table.

I've posted two dope tracks after the jump that caught my ear while I was exploring their site. Listen/download below...

Metaphysics has a party!!!

"I'm illuminated, not illuminati,
I"ll educate ya'll fools, you thought it was a party"

Metaphysics, the godfather of Zimbabwean hip hop, is back with an absolute MONSTER of a track!!!

The track is titled 'The Party', but its not what you expect - 'The Education' probably would have been a more appropriate title, since Meta takes you to school on this one!!

Crazy beat, crazy flow - just listen to this lyrical destruction...and take notes:

 The party by gandanga

Teeto Ceemos – Da Freshness (Mixtape)

A semi-finalist in the 2008 Sprite Emcee Africa Competition (*cough - i think he beat Snaz-D in that round* cough), Teeto Ceemos has always been one of my favourite emcees on the continent. I, for one have been eagerly anticipating more of his work. With the smash hit Oshamo (Ft Tha Suspect) out we all hoped that would be an appetiser of things to come. Well here is "Da Freshness" Mixtape brought to you by Fresh Boy Entertainment.

ps. Check out track 14 "Pull Up" produced by me - Shameless plug but who cares?

The G.A.N.G – Shadow Of The Night

These guys have a really polished sound, very impressive. The track is definitely an ANTHEM - sounds like it could be the theme song to a movie or TV series! (I wonder if their manager is reading this?)

Anyway, great song - the singer sounds so much like R.Kelly!

Kole Hash - Grind Ft. Modenine

Nice tune from newcomer Kole Hash, and it never hurts to have Modenine on a track with you. Mode delivers a dope hook while Kole drops some nice lines about his daily grind.

Are you on your grind?

UPDATE: Apparantly, Kole Hash is the first artist signed to Red Eye Records, the label where ModeNine is an artist and the C.E.O.

Modenine Freestyle - Welcome to the Factory

Evidence as to why ModeNine is regarded one of the best in Africa:

"I love Biggie but I don't rock Gucci Mane,
I burn your wack shit now you Wocka Flocka Flame"

Beazy – Bad Guy (Remix) Ft. Illbliss & Terry Da Rapman

Some dope Nigerian hip hop!

I love the beat on this joint! Got that classic dark feel to it, kinda like a mobb deep sound...and all the artists came correct. The chorus complements the beat perfectly too - yup, this is a BANGER!!

UPDATE: I added the VIDEO for the original version of this song below, keep reading to check it out.

Send it my way..

Nice visuals from SDC (Show Dem Camp) ft Poe, off their upcoming Clone Wars mixtape.

This is great - one of Zimbabwe's upcoming talents got his track playlisted on GoodFella Radio's Top 5 audio for the week! Mariachi alongside the likes of Usher, Drake and Rick Ross!!

Mariachi - 'The Startin n End' ft. FTR

He has drawn obvious comparisons to Jay-Z with his voice and style, so head over to Mariachi's facebook page to see exactly what he has to say about that!
